Meet Your Instructor - David Velez
David has been teaching, tracking, recording, and producing drums since the early 2000’s. From the biggest multi-million dollar studios, to the grimiest DIY studios, practice spaces, and live stages up and down the U.S.
“When I was touring as a hired gun, the other bands would always ask me to tune their drums for them, after hearing how good mine sounded live. Eventually, those same bands would ask me to come to the studio and tune their drums while tracking. I would end up teaching them how to tune their own drums in the studio in just a few hours.”
One day, while taking drum lessons with James Payne (Kataklysm, Hiss From the Moat, Hour of Penance) he couldn’t take it anymore. “I told him ‘Man your drums sound ass! Do you ever tune them?’ He had never taken the time to learn how, despite having toured the world for over a decade.”
After showing James this easy, repeatable system for tuning in less than 2 hours, James basically demanded that he make a course to teach it to others, and thus, this course was born.
David currently runs Riviera Beach Studios where he only tracks drums, no guitars! He also has started the Youtube Channel “Beats and Meats”, where he shares his love of drum sounds, and his hatred for guitarists everywhere.

YES! In fact, we think you are at a serious advantage because you don’t have bad habits that you’ll need to break while learning how to properly tune your drums. So, yes, this will totally work for you!
What are the tuning tools that David uses in the course?
The main tools are the Drum Dial, and the Tune-Bot which you will need in order to fully follow the steps of this training.
Am I able to complete this training without the Drum Dial or Tune-Bot?
In an effort to be fully transparent, some people do have the skill to be able to tune drums by ear by simply tapping the lugs. However, it will take YEARS to develop your ear to be able to do it. Technically, you can complete the training without the Drum Dial or Tune-Bot, but it will be significantly harder and take much, much longer… We’d recommend grabbing the tools that Dave uses and to follow his lead!
Will there be updates to this training showing different drums and drum sizes?
Yes, based on feedback from users, Dave will be happy to make new videos discussing tuning techniques for different drums, sizes, and tunings.
